This is a playlist of Stax Records. It is a documentary and story of Stax Records. This story should be known. We always here about Motown, but not all of us know about Stax. Al Bell (Stax Director of Promotions): "The finger snap signaled a change."

I often use to wonder about the Stax Logo. When I was a little girl, I wondered why they used a hand for a logo. I saw the logo as a hand and not a finger snap. Even though the fingers are together in the logo, I could not put it together that it was a logo symbolizing a finger snap. The hand was always spooky looking to me through a child's eyes. Now that I'm an adult, I laugh at my thoughts as a child. So what does the symbol mean to me now. It means music. The symbol represents all of us that love great finger snapping music. I can see more clearly now laugh out loud.

Don Cornelius Soul Train Legend Remembered

It is said that Don Cornelius took his own life at age 75. It's a sad way to die. His life was good as far as a career and a retired man from Soul Train. Don must have been very troubled so bad that he had to end his life. It is said that he had been through a bad divorce. When he was no longer on Soul Train, I would often wonder what he was doing because I never heard anything else about him. I could tell that he was a very private man, but for some reason, my mind stayed on him. Right before his death, I had seen a Soul Train documentary on VH1 last year. I had a funny feeling about it because it had been such a long time since I heard anything about Don Cornelius since Soul Train. Right before his death, I have been seeing repeats of Soul Train on television. I am sad that he has taken his life. He must have been really tired of fighting.

Johnny Taylor Clip From Soul Train

Dragon Lady came from Johnny Taylor's song, Disco Lady. It is a very good song. For some reason, I remember hearing Dragon Lady the most. That's funny. Disco Lady was a song of the 70's. I don't know why I don't remember hearing it. Maybe it wasn't played on the radio much or it just didn't grab my attention back then. However, the commercial sure did. Now I know Disco Lady, and it's a song that is still like brand new.

Carla Thomas is the Queen of Memphis soul. She is the daughter of the late Rufus Thomas. Carla made records for Stax Records in the 1960's. Her most famous single was, "Gee Wiz" (Look at His Eyes). This is a beautiful song to me and my first time hearing it. It is better than anything new playing on the radio today. I get sick and tired of gangster rap and hip hop. Carla Thomas is real soul.

There is a great movie unmade that should be made about Otis Redding. He married a woman named Zelma which he met in Macon, Georgia, in 1959. They were married in 1961 and Otis died in 1967. According to Zelma, Otis never saw color and he always had time for the big man and the little man. It just did not matter to him. That’s why so many people knew and loved him a lot. Zelma would tell Otis how nice he sang, and he would always say that he couldn’t sing. He would say that he could gimmick real good. Well, from what I hear when I hear his voice, it’s some pretty good gimmicking. The man could sing.

If someone makes a movie about Otis Redding, there would probably be some action in the movie. I was reading some words from a man name Alan “Red” Walden. According to Alan, Otis was not a violent person. You nearly had to pin him against the wall to get him to react, but once he did, you never forgot it. Alan said, “One night in North Carolina, he was down on his knees singing “These Arms Of Mine”, when this guy got jealous of Otis’ effect on his wife. Otis had his eyes closed while he was singing, and this guy walked up on the stage and belted him in the face….Otis finished the song, stood up, got off the stage, and beat the ……out of this guy in front of everybody. A policeman was there, and he kept saying, “Hit him, Otis, I didn’t see a thing,” while Otis beat the crap out of this guy.”

If a movie is ever made about Otis Redding, the sad part would be his death. According to Zelma, the morning he got killed, he called her around eight in the morning. Otis sounded kind of down. He told her that he was tired. There was more that she said he said, but I’m feeling too sad to write the rest. However, I would love to see the good memories of Otis Redding made into a movie.

Respect Yourself_The Stax Records Story PBS

It seems that Stax music had something powerful to say. Their music seemed loud, strong, and soulful. Stax is known as Soulsville. Stax Music is truly about soul. When I was small, I strongly remember Otis Redding from Stax Records. "Sitting on the Doc of the Bay" was my favorite. I use to sing that song, and I didn't really know the meaning like I know the meaning now. Knowing and feeling makes the difference when you sing, and that's what Stax Music was all about.
